When applying for citizenship, individuals between the ages of 14 and 64 must demonstrate that they are proficient in one of Canada's official languages as of the submission date. The regulations define the required minimum linguistic proficiency as the ability to:
Engage in brief daily talks
Recognize basic directions
When communicating orally, use simple grammar, simple structures, and simple tenses.
Make use of words appropriate for everyday spoken conversation.
