Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a non-immigrant (work) permit which enables international F-1 visitors to work in their area of study in the U.S. during a period as long as 12 months. Graduates with STEM could be allowed a 24 months extension. OPT may be applied either during or after graduation with 90 percent of students applying to post-completion OPT.
Students will also have an opportunity of having work experience in place of study when given the OPT and this increases their chances in employment. It is not necessary for the company to be sponsored by employers in getting international talent through OPT. It even becomes a gateway to long term visas such as H-1B.
